IPL Color Correction aftercare: first 48 hours and 2-week care
By THRYV Aesthetics & Medical Weight Loss | October 12, 2026
We hear it all the time: you want the results, and you want the rules in plain language. Our team gets a lot of love for how we treat people, and we keep that same energy after your appointment. Here’s the most important rule after IPL Color Correction in Lutherville-Timonium: protect your skin from sun and heat for at least 48 hours. That means no tanning, no hot showers, no sauna, and no sweaty workouts. Then we keep you on gentle skincare and daily SPF for the full two weeks while pigment lifts.
Quick reality check: IPL Color Correction is a 15-minute, non-invasive treatment that targets sun damage, redness, and brown pigment. The light does the work, but your aftercare is what keeps the skin calm enough to heal evenly.
The first 0–48 hours after IPL: the rules that prevent irritation
Right after IPL, your skin tends to feel warm, look pink, and act a little reactive. We generally recommend treating it like a mild sunburn. Calm skin heals cleaner, and cleaner healing helps you get that brighter, more even tone you came in for.
Do this
- Cool compress as needed, 5 to 10 minutes at a time. No ice directly on skin.
- Gentle cleanse with lukewarm water. Pat dry, don’t rub.
- Light, bland moisture if you feel tight or dry.
- SPF every morning, even if you “won’t be out long.”
Avoid this
- Sun and tanning beds. This is the big one for preventing hyperpigmentation after IPL.
- Hot showers, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms. Heat can keep you red longer.
- Hard exercise that makes you sweat. Sweat plus heat equals irritation for many people.
- Retinoids, acids, scrubs, exfoliating brushes. Give your skin a break.
- Makeup on raw spots. If anything looks open or feels tender, let it breathe.
If you’re commuting the I-83/York Road corridor, keep SPF where you can grab it. Sun sneaks in during quick stops. And yes, fall in Lutherville-Timonium still requires sunscreen. The UV doesn’t take the season off.
Days 3–7: what “normal” looks like when pigment starts lifting
This is the part that surprises people. Brown spots can look darker before they look lighter. Redness often calms down, and then you may notice a peppery look to pigment, mild dryness, or a light flake. That’s usually your skin doing what it’s supposed to do.
Keep it simple for one full week
- Cleanse gently once or twice a day. If it feels tight, drop to once.
- Moisturize morning and night with something fragrance-free.
- SPF 30+ daily, and reapply if you’re in the car a lot or near windows.
- Don’t pick at darkened spots. Let them shed naturally.
Small but important: If you’re someone who flushes easily, runs warm, or has a habit of long hot showers, this is the week to keep water lukewarm. Less heat usually means less lingering redness.
We’re on the York Road commercial corridor near the Timonium business district, so if you’re unsure about something you’re seeing in the mirror, it’s easy to swing by for a quick look and reassurance.
Days 8–14: keep pigment calm, prevent hyperpigmentation, and don’t rush actives
Week two is where people start noticing a clearer tone and smoother texture, especially if sun damage and redness were the main targets. It’s also where folks get tempted to restart every active serum they own. If you do that too early, irritation can set you back.
Our general timing for active skincare
Unless we tell you otherwise, we generally recommend holding retinoids and acid exfoliants for 2 to 4 weeks. That includes tretinoin, retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and at-home peels. Your skin may look fine at day 10 and still be sensitive under the surface.
Darker skin tones: If you tan easily or you’re a deeper Fitzpatrick type, strict sun protection is not optional. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk is higher, so we’ll want you extra consistent with SPF and follow-ups.
We see clients coming in from Timonium, Lutherville, Towson, Cockeysville, Brooklandville, and Mays Chapel. The advice doesn’t change by zip code. The sun is the sun.
The 3-product routine we like after IPL: cleanser, moisturizer, mineral SPF
After IPL Color Correction, simple wins. You don’t need a dozen steps. You need the right types of products used consistently.
- Non-foaming, gentle cleanser: no scrubs, no strong fragrance, no “tingle.”
- Fragrance-free ointment or ceramide moisturizer: twice daily is usually enough. If you feel greasy, use less, not more.
- Mineral (physical) SPF 30+: especially important if you’re trying to prevent dark spots after IPL.
Hold perfumes, alcohol-based toners, and strong actives until we clear you to restart them.
If you’re also doing other services, like botox or weight loss support, tell us what’s scheduled so we can space things in a way that keeps your skin steady and your calendar realistic.

When to call us same-day after IPL (and what’s usually fine)
Most people do great with IPL when they follow the timing. The bigger issue we see is people getting busy, going back to workouts too soon, skipping sunscreen “just once, ” or restarting retinol because they miss their routine. If you’re a commuter or a parent with a packed schedule, that’s normal. We’ll keep it simple and we won’t judge.
Usually normal
- Redness that looks like a mild sunburn
- Darkening of sun spots before they fade
- Dryness or light flaking over 1 to 2 weeks
Call us same-day
- Blistering that doesn’t quickly calm down
- Heavy swelling, worsening pain, or spreading redness
- Fever or anything that looks like infection (oozing, warmth that’s increasing)
