What to Expect at Your First TRT Consultation (In-Person) image

A lot of people walk in nervous, and we get it. We’ve had patients tell us they were “super nervous at first” because of cost, fear of judgment, and not wanting to feel dependent on anything, and then felt relieved once they met our team and realized there’s no pressure and no shame in taking control of your health.

At your first in-person TRT consultation, we’ll review your symptoms and medical history, take baseline vitals, and order or schedule blood tests like total and free testosterone, CBC, CMP, PSA (age-dependent), and a hormone panel. We’ll talk through risks and benefits in plain language, go over treatment options, and send you home with a clear next-step plan. If you bring prior labs and a current medication list, we can usually move faster.

Your TRT consultation checklist (so we don’t waste your 30 minutes)

Our in-person consult is 30 minutes, so a little prep goes a long way. Here’s what we generally recommend you bring or have ready on your phone:

  • A current medication and supplement list (including any hormones, hair-loss meds, or “natural testosterone boosters”).
  • Prior labs if you have them, especially hormone labs. Screenshots are fine.
  • Your symptom summary: low energy, lower libido, mood changes, trouble recovering from workouts, stubborn fat gain, sleep issues, brain fog, or anything else you’ve noticed.
  • A few health basics: past diagnoses, surgeries, family history, and if you’ve ever been told your PSA was elevated.

A quick lab timing note: testosterone levels tend to read highest earlier in the day, so morning blood draws are usually best. If we ask you to schedule an AM draw or come fasting, we’ll tell you directly when we set up your labs.

Time-saver tip: If you’ve tried telehealth and felt unsure, bring that experience up. People tell us they feel better when they can sit down in person and ask every question without feeling rushed.

How your first TRT visit actually flows at THRYV (step by step)

When you arrive at our York Road location near the Timonium business district, we’ll get you checked in and into a private space quickly. A lot of our patients are fitting this into a packed schedule, so we keep the pace steady without making it feel like a conveyor belt.

1) We start with your “why” and your timeline

First, we talk. You’ll tell us what’s been going on and what you’re hoping changes. Some men come in for low energy and low drive. Others feel like they’re doing “everything right” in the gym but not seeing progress. We’ll also ask when you first noticed symptoms and what you’ve tried so far.

2) Baseline vitals and health history (quick, not awkward)

We’ll take baseline vitals and walk through your medical history and current meds. This matters for safety and for picking the right plan. And yes, we’ll ask about things that can feel personal, like sexual function, fertility goals, and sleep. We keep it professional and straightforward. People who were worried about judgment often relax once they realize we’re here to help, not lecture.

3) Labs: what we check and why

If you don’t already have recent labs we can use, we’ll order or schedule them. Baseline testing is where a responsible TRT plan starts. Common TRT blood tests include:

  • Total and free testosterone (to confirm levels and give context to symptoms)
  • CBC (red blood cells and other counts)
  • CMP (liver and kidney markers)
  • PSA when appropriate based on age and history
  • LH/FSH and other hormone markers as needed
  • Sometimes thyroid or lipid testing, depending on your symptoms and risk factors

4) Clear talk about options, risks, and what’s reversible

We’ll go over what TRT can help with, what it won’t fix by itself, and the tradeoffs. Fertility is a big one. If having children is on your radar, say it out loud in the consult. We’ll talk through what that means and what directions make sense. We’ll also review possible side effects, how we monitor them, and what follow-up labs typically look like.

Real talk: A first TRT visit should leave you with a plan, not confusion. If you walk out feeling like you can’t repeat what the next step is, we haven’t done our job.

5) Next steps, including TRT injection training (if that’s part of your plan)

Before you leave, we’ll outline what happens next: when to do labs, how we’ll review results, and what your follow-up schedule looks like. If your plan includes injections, ask us about TRT injection training. A lot of people feel calmer when they know they won’t be figuring it out alone.

“But the staff is amazing and professional.”

After your TRT consult: results, follow-ups, and what you might feel

Most men don’t feel a dramatic change right after the consultation itself. The “win” after your first TRT visit is clarity. You’ll know what we’re testing, what we’re watching, and what comes next.

If we draw blood that day, you might have a little arm tenderness, just like any lab work. If your labs are scheduled later, plan for a morning appointment if possible. It often gives the cleanest testosterone read.

And if TRT is a fit and you start treatment, our job is to keep your monitoring tight and your communication easy. That follow-up rhythm matters. People come to us for a lot of things, including men’s wellness, weight loss support, and even aesthetic services like botox. The common thread is the same: you should never feel like you’re doing this alone.

A quick rebook guide: If you’re waiting on labs, we’ll schedule the follow-up that makes sense for reviewing results and mapping your next steps. If you need sooner touchpoints, let us know up front so we can plan around work and family schedules.

The confidence piece: questions we want you to ask in a first TRT visit

One thing we hear again and again is that support changes everything. People who felt anxious at first often relax once they realize we’re going to explain the plan, answer the uncomfortable questions, and keep the follow-up simple.

Here are questions that make a first TRT consultation more useful:

  • Which labs are you ordering for me, and what are you looking for in each one?
  • Do you recommend morning testing for my situation, and do I need to fast?
  • If treatment includes injections, what does your TRT injection training look like?
  • How often will we repeat labs, and what changes would make you adjust my plan?
  • If fertility matters to me, what are my options?

A detail you’ll notice at THRYV: we don’t rush past concerns. Patients tell us they appreciated that we took time on the phone and in person to explain the plan and answer questions, especially when they were new to medications or nervous about next steps.

If you’re coming in from Towson, Cockeysville, or up and down the York Road corridor, we’re easy to reach off I-83, and Light Rail access makes quick check-ins realistic too.

If you want a broader view of how we support men beyond TRT, read our Men’s Wellness guide before your visit. Then come in with your questions, your labs if you have them, and your honest symptom list. We’ll take it from there.
